CHARLESTON, S.C. They won’t be able to fly those big C-17s, but 36 people are being named honorary commanders at the Charleston Air Force Base.

Wednesday’s observance is part of a program to let local leaders better understand the role the Charleston base plays in the local community and in national defense.

Business leaders from the Charleston area are named honorary commanders as part of the program now in its eighth year.

Ingrid Tugwell was inducted as Honorary Commander, 437th Communications Squadron, Charleston Air Force Base on 29 October 2008.
